Well socialised and trained dogs can be taken anywhere, are
friendly with new people and dogs and are well-behaved at
home. Poorly socialised or trained dogs can be fearful or
aggressive with other animals or people and exhibit problem
behaviours like barking, biting, jumping up and running away.
All dogs have the potential for both types of behaviour.
The difference is puppy school!-
- 5 Week Course
- 1 hour per class
- Held in the courtyard of Struggletown
- Start after 10 week vaccination
- Special Headstart Classes for under 10 weeks
Puppy School offers a safe pleasant environment to socialise
your pup with others of a similar age. This is of great importance
as it helps your pup learn how to behave with other dogs,
people and children, an essential skill for everyday living.
We use positive reinforcement training which involves using
food, toys and praise to teach simple commands such as; sit,
stay, come, down, drop, leave and ‘off the furniture’!
Many dog behaviours, such as barking and chewing, may be
unwanted but they are also natural dog behaviours. At puppy
school you will be shown how these behaviours can be controlled
and minimised.

Don’t wait to master the basics!
Our Headstart Classes are designed to provide owners with
information on coping with a new puppy as soon as you bring
your puppy home. They are attended by owners only, before
the puppies are old enough to come along (under 12 weeks).
The classes cover toilet training, sleeping, biting and early
socialisation. You can ask questions about any health care
or behaviour problems you may have with your pup.

Who can come?
All members of the family are welcome to attend classes.
In fact it is very important that everyone understands the
basics of dog training so that your puppy receives consistent
feedback. Children need to be supervised by an adult.
Most people and their dogs find puppy school not only informative
but also an enjoyable experience. Who would not enjoy watching
the playful antics of a group of cute puppies for an hour?
The puppies have an enjoyable time playing with other dogs
and so are happy to come into the clinic when it is time for
a check up or vaccination.

How do I book?
Please call the clinic on 9398 8000 to book
a course of classes or to attend a Headstart class.
